16 September 2025 - GRAVITY GRAND PRIX 2025
In spite of the rain the 18th Gravity Grand Prix in Cookham Dean took place as usual with an enthusiastic crowd. The event has grown dramatically since its inception when there were just a few karts and no extras. This year there were food vendors, fairground rides, barbecue food, as well as Pimm’s and a hog roast from The Inn on The Green. There were activities for the children too including a bouncy castle. Apart from one crash the whole afternoon went smoothly.
The first Gravity Grand Prix was supposed to have taken place in 2007 with organiser Peter Bartlett who had got the idea from a visit to the West Country, however it had to be cancelled, after six months as a local resident objected to the road closure because they were were having another event on the same day. However it finally took place. See some photos of the 2012 Gravity Grand Prix.

8 AUGUST 2025 - COOKHAM HAD THE FIRST HOSPICE
At the 2025 Cookham Dig at Holy Trinity church, the archaeologists have found "a lot more in the way of human remains", particularly "a number of juvenile remains".
The evidence of those in the monastery caring for the sick was "really important".
It has been stated that "At the time, care for the soul and care for the body were treated almost as the same - equal importance.
"But it's also showing the execution of this religious duty in the actual practice of this monastery.
Professor Gabor Thomas, who leads the project, said: “Initial analysis of the remains discovered at Cookham indicates a high prevalence of individuals with unusual or severe pathological conditions. Nearly every person suffered from some form of health challenge, and this would have been obvious to those in their community.
“It is possible that the monastery may have been one of the UK’s earliest hospices, offering medical care to people with, ailments, injuries and those coming to the end of their lives. The diversity and rarity of conditions suggest that a proportion of these individuals may have come from beyond Cookham to seek healing.”
